Worship and Community

cartoon from www.weblogcartoons.com

Cartoon by Dave Walker.

This cartoon epitomizes one of my big problems.  I’d rather form superficial relationships (yes, maybe online ones) than actually take my time and befriend people.  How many times have I measured my worth by how many Facebook friends I have?  Life in the 21st century has become so compartmentalized that you and I don’t even know our neighbors!  This syndrome has crept into even small churches as well; how many people come to you Sunday service that you don’t know?

One of the things that the Apostle commands us to do is “sing and make melody in our hearts.” (Eph. 1:16)  The language that he uses not only implies that we should worship in song, but that we should worship corporately (”speaking to one another”).  Worship is about community, and if you and I are only focused on ourselves, and maybe our family, instead of becoming a family with the brothers and sisters around us, we miss one of the points of worship.  The church is unified under one glorious God, and we must love one another.  Let’s not forget to extend a hand of friendship to those around us during corporate worship time this week.
